U. of Phoenix Parent Is Added to Standard & Poor's 500 Index

The Apollo Group was added to the Standard & Poor's 500 Index last week, the first education company to be included in the widely used benchmark of stock-market performance.

Companies selected for the index are considered "the leading companies in leading U.S. industries," according to Standard & Poor's. To be chosen, a company must have stock that is both liquid and held by a diverse pool of investors. The company itself must have been profitable for at least four
