U. of North Dakota Keeps Nickname
The Fighting Sioux nickname will not go away — at least for now.
A state judge has granted an injunction that will allow the University of North Dakota's football team to use the nickname in postseason play, even though the university failed to abide by an NCAA requirement to change its nickname and mascot.
Last year the National Collegiate Athletic Association told 18 colleges that they could no longer use American Indian nicknames during postseason competition.
