U. of North Carolina Makes E-Mail Blunder

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill mistakenly sent 2,703 applicants an e-mail message last week congratulating them on their acceptance to the institution, even though the applications for the students are pending.

Admissions officials learned of the error an hour after it happened, but at the time thought the problem was limited to about 500 students.

The admissions office sent those students an apology, also by e-mail, explaining the problem.
