U. of New Mexico President Resigns

Louis Caldera, a son of Mexican immigrants who rose to become U.S. secretary of the Army, has resigned as president of the University of New Mexico, amid apparent friction with its Board of Regents.

Mr. Caldera will take an immediate leave of absence and formally leave office on August 1, a year before his contract was due to expire, according to a written statement released by the university.

David W. Harris, executive vice president for administration, will become acting
