A series of powerful tornadoes raked the area around Kearney, Neb., on Thursday, causing such serious damage to the University of Nebraska’s campus there that it had to shut down today. According to a statement on the university’s Web site, no one was injured, as students hunkered down in a basement during the storm, but four building suffered roof damage and there was “extensive tree damage” across the campus. The statement asked that only essential personnel report to work so cleanup and damage assessment can take place. —Andrew Mytelka
