U. of Nebraska Chancellor Puts Job on the Line Over Budget Cuts

In a highly unusual move, Harvey Perlman, chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, has called for a faculty vote on his controversial plan to cut the university's budget, and has vowed to resign if the faculty rejects his leadership.

If he loses the vote, Mr. Perlman has said he would also rescind his latest budget reduction proposal, which totals $7.5-million, and reinstate the eight tenured faculty members whose jobs were scheduled for elimination.
