U. of Michigan Names Its First Female President; Community-College System in Arizona Suffers Setback in Search for Chancellor
A MICHIGAN FIRST: Mary Sue Coleman will become the first woman to hold the job of president of the University of Michigan.
After a five-month search that was cloaked in secrecy, the Michigan regents voted unanimously last month to appoint her to the position. Ms. Coleman, 58, has had a long career as a biochemist and academic administrator and is currently the president of the University of Iowa.
