U. of Memphis Students Scrawl Hate Speech on Wall They Will Demolish

Colleges typically shun racial slurs and other stereotypes, but this week students at the University of Memphis are painting hateful words on a wall.

As part of the Writing on the Wall Project — and “Why Do You Hate Me?” Week — the student-activities council is encouraging anyone on the campus to paint a cinder block to “represent a real-life experience or emotion based on discrimination.” The words “bimbo,” “nerd,” and “redneck” appear, as do ethnic and racial epithets, according to a local news report.

The wall will remain on display at Memphis until Friday, when a group will gather to knock it down. In an online video, students describe the idea behind the project. “The more we use words of hate,” one student says, “the more we become the words we are called,” another finishes.

Several other campuses have built and demolished similar walls in recent years (here is a video from the University of Florida). But not everyone in Memphis supports the project. “There will always be discrimination,” one viewer posted online in response to the YouTube video. “Go back to trying to figure out the parking situation.” —Sara Lipka
