U. of Maine Chancellor Abandons Key Elements in Controversial Plan to Restructure System
The chancellor of the University of Maine System has dropped two controversial provisions in a proposed reorganization plan for the state's seven public universities.
Reacting to vehement protests from around the state, Joseph W. Westphal announced at a meeting of the system's Board of Trustees in August that the state's three smallest universities would not be merged into one. He also abandoned plans to quickly move all two-year programs to the state's community colleges.
