U. of Louisville Emphasizes Communication on Its Campus

When a student took a University of Louisville employee hostage in March, administrators sent more than 7,000 text messages to mobile phones and 9,000 alarms to land lines within 18 minutes of the threat.

"Hostage situation at Student Health Services. Stay away from the area," the text read. E-mail messages and an alert on the university's Web site followed. After the situation was defused, the university followed up with e-mail messages that described the series of events to students,
