U. of Illinois Investigates Potential Conflict of Interest by Police Institute's Director

The University of Illinois is looking into a possible conflict of interest by the director of its police-training institute, who also serves as a consultant for Blackwater U.S.A., a leading military contractor, according to today’s Chicago Tribune. The director, Tom Dempsey, a former Marine who has led the institute for five years, signed a deal allowing the institute and Blackwater to share facilities, and to exchange faculty members and students. The Tribune reported that the agreement could allow Blackwater to drum up new business in training law-enforcement officials in the state. Mr. Dempsey, who is on a leave of absence in Afghanistan, did not talk to the Tribune. —Andrew Mytelka
