Gatorade -- the technology-transfer success story that almost wasn't -- is celebrating its 35th birthday.

Although invented at the University of Florida in 1965, the product and its formula were never patented by the institution. In fact, the university initially gave up any rights to the beverage, which was first sold to the public in 1967.
