U. of Colorado's President Offends With Word Choice

The University of Colorado’s president, Hank Brown, riled at least one listener on Friday when he warned that unless the state spent more on higher education, it would “ghettoize” middle-income students.

Mr. Brown and other Colorado college and university presidents were meeting in the state capital with the higher-education commission to seek more money for higher education. Colorado’s governor, Bill Ritter, will send his budget to state lawmakers on November 1.

According to the Rocky Mountain News, Jim Stewart, the only black member of the commission, said he was offended by Mr. Brown’s remark and followed him out of the room, “where they had words behind a coat closet.”

Mr. Brown’s point was apparently that, while low-income students will qualify for scholarships, those whose families earn just slightly too much to qualify will be forced to attend low-cost programs.
