U. of Colorado Hires Olympic Medalist as Title IX Expert

Three months after settling a lawsuit brought by two women who said they had been gang-raped by football players and recruits at an off-campus party in 2001, the University of Colorado at Boulder has appointed a gender-equity expert and Olympic medalist as its new Title IX adviser.

Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a gold and silver medalist in swimming at the 1984 Olympic Games and now a professor at the Florida Coastal School of Law, will fill the position, which was created under the terms of the university’s $2.85-million settlement in December.

Ms. Hogshead-Makar, who specializes in Title IX matters, is a co-author of Equal Play: Title IX and Social Change. She is also a legal adviser to the Women’s Sports Foundation. —Libby Sander
