The University of California is revamping its undergraduate application to learn more about the ethnic backgrounds of the Asian-American and Pacific Islander students who have come to dominate its enrollment.
Next year, on the ethnic-identification question, students will be able to choose from 23 categories of Asian and Pacific Islander, up from eight, the Contra Costa Times reports today. The system adopted the change after thousands of students sent postcards to its offices in a “Count Me In” campaign, which pushed for the increased specificity.
The larger number of categories will enable the system’s administrators to determine which groups of Asian and Pacific Islanders enroll and do well, and which do not, says the newspaper. The university’s goal is to move beyond the “model minority” myth to better recruit and track groups, such as Hmong and Samoan students, that have not been adequately studied. —Elyse Ashburn
