U. of California Official Quits Amid Sports Scandal

A University of California vice president who gave bogus course credit to football players two years ago is stepping down.

Alex M. Saragoza, a professor of ethnic studies on the university's Berkeley campus, had been the system's vice president for educational outreach for only 10 months.

His interim replacement will be Manuel N. Gómez, the vice chancellor for student affairs on the Irvine campus.
