U. of California Faculty Wants to Drop SAT by 2006

The University of California would drop the SAT by 2006 and replace it with new admissions tests in reading, writing, and mathematics as well as in two additional subject areas, under a proposal that a faculty committee presented last month to the system's Board of Regents.

The discussion among the regents marked the first time that they have officially weighed in on President Richard C. Atkinson's proposal in February 2001 that the prestigious public system eliminate the SAT I. The
