Turkmenistan Universities Told to Stiffen Admissions Criteria; Britain Tries to Stanch Scientific Brain Drain; Myanmar May Allow Classes to Resume
The president of Turkmenistan has called on the country's higher-education institutions to use stricter admissions criteria -- including the screening of candidates' parents and grandparents.
In a meeting with the former Soviet republic's top education officials last month, President Saparmurat Niyazov scolded ministers and university heads about the poor quality of graduates.
"You don't put your heart into your work," he told Education Minister Abat
