A Turkish court today acquitted a retired archaeologist who was being prosecuted for suggesting that the head scarfs worn by many observant Muslim women originated in a cult in which ancient Mesopotamian priestesses initiated young men in sex, the Associated Press reported this morning. The scholar, Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, who is 92, is only the most recent of several academics and intellectuals, including a University of Arizona professor, to be prosecuted under Turkish laws banning insults to the nation or to religions. Today’s trial lasted less than an hour. The court ruled that Ms. Cig’s theory did not amount to a crime.
