Turkey's Parliament Approves 'Amnesty' Bill
Turkey's Parliament approved a bill last month granting "amnesty" to any student dismissed from a university since June 29, 2000, for academic or disciplinary reasons. The country's universities had already expressed opposition to what they consider government meddling in admissions decisions.
In addition, some critics said the measure was intended to help the thousands of young women who were expelled from universities or barred from enrolling for wearing an Islamic-style head scarf.
