Tuition Freeze Seems Likely at Maryland State Colleges

A plan to impose a tuition freeze at public colleges and universities in Maryland cleared an initial hurdle on Wednesday, when the state’s Senate approved a budget that would reverse a decision by the University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents to raise undergraduate tuition by up to 4.5 percent, The Washington Post reported this morning. Under the proposal, the system would get a $20-million larger appropriation to make up for the lost tuition revenue. The House is expected to consider a tuition freeze as part of its budget legislation next week, and Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a Republican running for re-election, is said to be planning a supplemental budget request that also incorporates a tuition freeze.
