Trustees at American U. Fire President but Remain Divided Over Severance

By deciding last week to fire American University's president, Benjamin Ladner, the institution's Board of Trustees settled one controversy that has roiled the 11,700-student university, and the board itself, in recent months.

But the board's problems appear far from over. Two trustees resigned amid what one said were contentious closed-door negotiations over Mr. Ladner's dismissal and possible severance package, the terms of which might not be made public.
