Trustees Urged to Defend Their Independence From Politicians
With college governing boards increasingly under pressure from interest groups outside academe, a higher-education association is drawing up an eight-page statement that calls on trustees to defend academic freedom and avoid feeling beholden to those who appoint them.
The draft document, prepared by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, found that many public- and private-college boards have trouble balancing the competing agendas of outside groups --
