Saint Louis University administrators won approval from the university’s Board of Trustees on Saturday to replace the charter of the student newspaper, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The new charter, which takes effect May 15, changes how editors of the student-run University News are hired and fired.
Diana Benanti, the student paper’s departing editor in chief, sued the institution last week, alleging that university officials were attempting to gain more control over the paper because they objected to her editorials. Jeff Fowler, a university spokesman, denied that allegation on Saturday, telling the Post-Dispatch that administrators wanted to improve the quality of the student paper but had “no desire and no intent to control editorial decisions.” —Charles Huckabee
