A trustee accused of using his influence at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to benefit family members and political supporters has been removed from its board by Gov. Jon S. Corzine.
Governor Corzine, a Democrat, announced on Tuesday he was replacing Donald C. Bradley, who is also president of the Newark City Council. The governor also named a second nominee to fill a longstanding vacancy.
A report released this month by a federal monitor overseeing the public health-sciences university said that Mr. Bradley had pressured university officials into a real-estate deal that benefited a contributor to his political campaign. The report also alleged that he routinely pressured hiring officials at the institution to give preferential treatment to friends and family members, once reportedly threatening “retaliatory action” if a family member who had been fired was not rehired (The Chronicle, April 25).
Since taking office, in January, the governor has named an interim president and new chairman of the Board of Trustees at the scandal-plagued university (The Chronicle, January 24 and March 2). The new trustees still must be approved by the State Senate to take office.
