Tribal College Must Reinstate Workers
The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs was ordered this month to reinstate 20 laid-off union faculty and staff members at the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute after a federal arbitrator determined that the layoffs violated employee contracts.
The two-year college in Albuquerque, a tribal institution run directly by the federal government, dismissed more than 20 of its 130 government-employed workers in April 2005, during what it called a reduction in force.
