Toward Sociology as a Science, Maybe
It was the early 1950's, the era of McCarthyism, and I wanted to write a novel about what it meant to be an American. In addition to having difficulty with plot, character, and dialogue, I concluded that I didn't really understand American society. Clearly, before I could proceed, I needed to remedy that deficit.
