Hundreds of colleges now make the SAT and ACT tests optional elements in the admissions process. George Mason University has adopted a variant of that scheme. According to today’s Washington Post, students with good grades (3.5 grade-point average or higher) or good class ranks (top 20 percent) can apply to George Mason without taking the SAT. But they will have to write a special essay and send in two extra recommendations.
