Top Republicans Urge Bush to Keep Ferris as Head of Humanities Endowment
Two powerful Republican senators have urged President Bush to retain William R. Ferris as chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The support from Republican legislators is unusual, since Mr. Ferris was appointed by President Clinton.
Sens. Trent Lott and Thad Cochran, both of Mississippi, said Mr. Ferris should stay on because of his new ideas and popularity among the state humanities councils. Both senators wield enormous influence. Mr. Lott is the Senate's majority
