Togo Closes University to Stop Protests
The government of the small West African country of Togo has closed the University of Lomé indefinitely after violent clashes between students and the police over unpaid stipends.
The students took to the streets last month to demand improvements in their living conditions at the university, in the nation's capital. They also demanded the payment of stipends that were up to three years in arrears, and they defied university orders to return to class.
