To Pay for Expansion of Tuition Credits, Senate Panel Weighs Taxes on Endowments and College-Employee Benefits
The U.S. Senate Finance Committee, as part of an effort to expand federal income-tax credits for higher education, is considering several proposals to raise new tax revenue from colleges, including limits on the tax-free tuition benefits that colleges give their employees, taxes on endowments, and possible tuition price controls.
The rumored "offsets" to pay for expanding the tax credits have yet to be introduced, but higher-education officials are engaged in extensive negotiations
