This Year's Nobel Prizes Honor Work That Led to Everyday Applications
Research that has led to everyday applications seems to have been the theme for this year's Nobel prizes. All four of the awards in the sciences last week went to researchers whose work has already had impacts on society, including a treatment for Parkinson's disease, laser diodes used in the Internet's fiber-optic cables, plastic electronic materials in solar-energy cells, and the design of San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit system.
