Researchers discover bats are the source of many new and frightening diseases
In recent years, a string of new viruses has attacked humans, many of them killing their victims with unusual efficiency.
In 1994 an unknown pathogen appeared in Australia and left 15 horses dead in pools of frothy nasal discharge. Eventually named Hendra virus, it also killed two people. Four years later, another disease raced through Malaysian pig-farming communities and killed more than 100 people.
