The role of the faculty in academe is changing, says Martin Finkelstein, a professor of education at Seton Hall University.

"Writ large, college teaching is moving toward a contingent work force," he says. Nearly half of all faculty members work part time, and more than half of new full-time positions are off the tenure track. Most faculty members who are not on the tenure track
