The Wrong Way to Get Gifts
To the Editor:
Your May 25 article "Senate Tax Bill Features Measures Sought and Feared by Colleges" failed to mention that 86 percent of Americans feel that the estate tax is unfair (according to one poll). Nor did you mention that the super-rich, such as Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt, gave millions to libraries and universities long before there was an estate tax.
Relatedly, it makes for very poor public relations when university officials go on record as saying
