The Worst Acronym Ever in Higher Education?

To the Editor:

How could a story on acronyms in higher education ("What's in a Name? Letters, and Lots of 'Em," The Chronicle, November 28) pass up a chance to mention the American Sociological Society and its unfortunate acronym? The organization changed its name to the American Sociological Association in 1959, but one still wonders if anyone mourned the loss of the acronym, in use since the group's founding in 1905.
