E. Gordon Gee this year left both his job and the rank of highest-paid college president behind in Nashville.

After seven years as chancellor of Vanderbilt University, Mr. Gee last month began his second stint as president of Ohio State University. He has set the high-water mark for private-college chiefs in recent years, although Mr. Gee was passed by William R.
