The Study of Animals Wins a New Status From Sociology Association

The sociology of religion, sexuality, gender, mathematics, aging, computers, crime, and 34 other topics have won approval over the years as scholarly "sections" of the American Sociological Association. Two years ago, the group's governing board tried to draw the line at a new section on "animals and society." But in the latest conflict over how to extend the sociological imagination, "Wait a minute" finally lost out to "Oh, what the heck."
