The Sage for the Ages
In the mid-1990s, my wife and I met my son's middle-school science teacher at a parent-teacher conference. She had recently won a major teaching award, and we had looked forward to meeting her. She talked about her approach to teaching, saying she preferred to be "a guide on the side" rather than "a sage on the stage."
