The SAT May Be Like Democracy: the Worst Option, Except for All Others

The Chronicle's October 26 discussion of the SAT was thorough and very well done. Two articles, however, deserve comment.
Andrew Brownstein's "Colleges Debate Whether Dropping the SAT Makes Them More Competitive" implies that a prime motivation for making standardized testing optional is the improvement in average SAT scores in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. He goes on to suggest that my institution "may regret going optional" because our ranking
