The Role of Higher Education in a Democracy
To the Editor:
The essays by David G. Moore ("Toward a Single Definition of College," The Review, November 14) and Donald E. Heller ("Not All Institutions Are Alike," The Review, November 14) about the issue of different definitions of higher education both seem to miss a fundamental point: the nature and purpose of higher education in a democracy.
Both Heller and Moore write at length about the issue of accountability of the two types of institutions. Heller posits that
