The Role of Grammar in College Curriculums
To the Editor:
As a grammaphile (grammatophile?) and an editor by vocation, I was pleased to see someone finally addressing the lamentable state of grammar pedagogy in both secondary and higher education ("Of Grammatophobia," The Review, January 3). ...
I agree with Rodney D. Huddleston and Geoffrey K. Pullum's hypothesis that this trend may be partly due to the "focus on recommending and correcting" and the traditionally formulaic, staid approach to grammar in our schools.
