Vartan Gregorian clearly underscores the challenges facing K-12 education today ("Teacher Education Must Become Colleges' Central Preoccupation," The Review, August 17). ... His suggestions for improving public schools -- particularly those advocating that prospective teachers obtain a degree in arts and sciences and that alternative certification routes be developed -- hold great promise.
