Russell Jacoby's attack on the standing of Hannah Arendt totally misreads both the overall significance of her work and the value of the works within her canon ("Hannah Arendt's Fame Rests on the Wrong Foundation," The Chronicle Review, December 8). Arendt is a major political thinker of the 20th century because she was the first to understand in a fundamental way the common totalitarian basis of Nazism and Stalinism.
