In what way do the carpenters, teachers, thugs, housewives, farmers, policemen, mathematicians, and others who find their way into 12-step meetings constitute a "middlebrow" culture, as Trysh Travis claims ("Heathcliff and Cathy, the Dysfunctional Couple," The Review, May 11)? My first reaction upon reading this cool evaluation of the recovery movement was simply that Professor Travis has it backward: The 12-step movement is not middlebrow culture, but perhaps
