The Real Reason for Strife in English Departments

I doubt Mark Krupnick is right that English departments are more divisive than other departments ("Why Are English Departments Still Fighting the Culture Wars?," The Review, September 20). Even if he is, there's a better explanation for these divisions. Literary studies is a discipline whose job and resource base has suffered three decades of downsizing.
