The Real Problem With Tenure Is Incompetent Faculty Hiring

No one wants to admit it, but there really is a problem with tenure. Many departments contain several thoroughly dysfunctional people -- faculty members who repeatedly skip classes or otherwise fail to fulfill their most basic responsibilities. More common still are faculty members who lack intellectual vitality or who have long since stopped keeping up to date in their fields. Faculty members who haven't read current scholarship in decades are legion. We have procedures in place to
