The Purpose of Tenure for Any Generation

In "Rethinking Tenure for the Next Generation" (The Chronicle Review, September 11), Cathy A. Trower has drawn attention to a number of serious problems confronting faculty members in higher education. The problems are most acute for part-time faculty and younger faculty members, and need to be addressed. However, what is especially disappointing about Trower's essay is her narrow vision of the role and importance of the tenure system. I write as a tenured
