The Purpose of Ethnic Studies

To the Editor:

While we ponder the crumbs, the pie gets devoured ("Latino Studies and Black Studies: Bonds and Divergent Paths," The Review, August 8). Whose interests does this serve? Ilan Stavans has provided a wonderful discussion starter, to which I would add only a few questions.

If you believe, as I do, that we have everything to gain by inclusion, collaboration, and learning about and from one another, then why dignify the language of competition? For me, what is
