The Perversities of Admissions

On his blog, Burkean Reflections, the political scientist Donald Douglas has complained in the past about what he calls “the perversities of the university admissions process.” But today he’s torn about reports that some colleges are giving male applicants a thumb on the scale to make up for gender imbalances in their classes. Social engineering? Remedy for past discrimination against white males? Concern about a “war on boys” in the public schools?
